This is both a general and specific request at the same time.
A frind of mine recalls an article from a motorcycle magazine that had a very high mileage Nighthawk S in it. He also thinks he heard of someone who had been around the world a handful of times on their Nighthawk S. The fuuny part he remembers is that when asked about maintenance, the owner said "I had to replace the cam chain around 250,000 miles "!!
Also, I am just wondering if you guys have any stories about other Nighthawks that you have heard of with some major mileage on them.

I am doing a top-end job on a "gifted" '92 NH 750 (disassembled, "take it away and put it back together, I don't have time for it"), the odometer says 89,000 miles. I can't find anything wrong with it.

previous thread on similar topicThe shaft drive on the NightHawk S is supposedly harder on the engine than a chain drive would be. I read some (now unfindable) article about a motorcycle courier and the obscene mileage he racked up on various bikes, but I think his best life (~300K+) came from a VFR.

I put 55k on my first nighthawk S, I think I mentioned that on here before, it still ran, it had a ticking from the engine that people had various theories about but it started and ran and dare I say had less mechanical problems than the one I'm riding now with only 21k on it.

This brings a question to mind for this new rider. What is considered 'high mileage' for a MC? 100K on a car/truck is a no-brainer these days -- I guess I assumed MCs would be the same.
I got my 550 with just over 10K, so hopefully I'm good to go for a while.

My '85 S will turn 50k miles in the next week or so. I acquired it with 40k on it almost a year ago. This is the running state to date. - 2nd gear doesn't exist at more than 10% throttle - my riding buds say there is evidence of smoke from the exhaust when riding together at night - it uses about a pint of oil in 600 miles.
But.......it starts on the first try every time, and it runs circles around my '86 and '84. I guess it is just now getting well broken in. It generally gets 50 MPG regardless of my riding style on that particular tank of fuel.
After the new paint job is on the '86, I will pull this one down and repair the transmission. I am pretty sure it has a bent shift fork which I already have, ready to go in. Regardless of what else I may have at the time, I feel this one is and will continue to be my "go to" bike.

The one I've got now, a 98 has just under 50k on it, and when I had it at the shop today the guy said thats a normal amount for the bike. And that he has seen higher on them, but they always keep running.
P.s. In his opinion NHs are the best bikes ever made. And this guys shop was full to the brim with Harleys, beamers, triumphs and everything else under the sun. Small one guy shop here in BK. Yet I digress.

My '83 650 has a little over 73,000 miles, and runs absolutley fine (knock on wood) I have to play with ethe choke/throttle first time I start it for the day, but then its fine all day.

My pastors brother has a '92 750 with 75,000 on it. The only reason I know is because he rode it to church a couple of weeks ago, which is a 3 hour trip for him. He rode up with his son who was riding a KLR 650, and 2 of his buddies, one on a harley, and the other on an old Nortan. which was also a pretty nice bike. Our pastor has a CB 750, not exactly sure what year, but its early 70's.

my 82 has 14XXX on it, with no issues rideing every day, i got it in may i think with around 11,900 an dput the rest on it since then...i consiter around 80K hight for a bike, my dad has taken 4 bikes that hight 2 which where brand new...we figured out hes ridein like 440,000 miles in 14 years...

Ive got 61K on my 84 700S and it runs good. 2nd gear is dicey with high RPM shifts (risky, but I gotta see what she can do) and it runs rich and has a few oil leaks. It gives no hint that its not going to keep on truckin'

That's some great mileage on the bikes. I purchased my cb650sc with about 32k on it in April. I just passed 38k and the bike is running great. It squeaks and creaks but the bike starts straight up, runs strong and the transmission seems solid. I hope these bikes are long lived.

Better check out those swingarm pivots, if it's squeaking when you get on it. Also the bushings at the rear shocks. The key to a long-lived motorcycle is careful and timely maintenance BEFORE something goes wrong!

I sold my 1984 Nighthawk 650 in 1993 with 172,406 miles on it... Never did a thing to it besides oil/filter/plugs etc... I lost touch with Jerry but I know it hit over 200K and he was still riding it.

In 1991, I bought a used 83 650 NH that had 30,000 on it. I sold it with almost 40,000 and it ran perfectly. The only thing I ever had to do to it was plugs, fluid changes, battery, stator and speedo cable. I'm still kicking myself for selling that bike.  I should have held onto it until I could have afforded a new set of forks.
