So here's my issue. My original '91 nighthawk tank was toasted by rust. While trying to determine how to best repair the extensively rusted tank I found a tank for a '95 nighthawk new in the box on Ebay. For the price I couldn't pass it up. In the end when I got it I found out that the '95 tank has an additional fitting (looks like a normal fuel line fitting) on the bottom of the tank. My original tank only had fittings on the petcock itself. Does anyone know what this additional fitting is for and if I can bypass it for my bike? Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Is it on the right side as you sit on the bike? I mean, on the opposite side as the petcock?
If so, it's for a California model - we've got extra emissions crap.

Hang a hose on the extra fitting to allow it to drain to the ground if overfilled. Then....

Did your new tank come with a cap? If not, you might want to check that your existing cap will fit. The California tanks are made to use a non-vented cap.

It sounds like that might be a California tank. If I recall correctly, the CA models had an extra hose that led to the charcoal cannister. The idea was to vent the tank into the cannister, rather than to the atmosphere.
If that's the case, I wouldn't plug it, as that would cause venting problems. I'd just find some nice spot where it can vent under the bike.

Thanks for the advice, all. The California model makes sense. I kind of guessed that but I wasn't sure if fuel would come flowing out if I just ignored it. I'll see if I need a new cap (hopefully not) but I think I can handle a drain hose. THANKS EVERYONE!!

It does go to a charcoal canister on the Cali models. I wouldn't plug it off, but the hose should work.

Terrific news for me! The regular cap from my old tank fits perfect. All I need to do is to hang a line to vent (or possibly just cap it off since my cap is vented) and I'm set to go. Thanks again for all the good advice.

Hey I also have a rusty old tank on my 1985 450, any chance the late model gas tanks will bolt right in the frame?
