The rain finally stopped (getting a lot this year in San Diego - On the weekends of course!) so I took Black Beauty for a nice long ride along with my bud Jim on his KLR.

Headed out of Alpine on HWY 8, and grabbed HWY 78 to head into Julian to meet Jim.

Here's a shot just North of Descanso:

This is about 1/2 way up 78 towards Cuyamaca Lake:

I made a quick stop st Cuyamaca Lake for a picture:

Just South of Julian is a nice viewpoint that overlooks the Anza Borrego Desert - That's the way we're headed:

Here's my bud Jim with the bikes at the Julian Library - It was a bit chilly so we were looking forward to hitting the desert floor:

We followed HWY 78 all the way into Blythe - Here's a series of pictures along the way:

Here are a few shots of the Dunes at Glamis:

Last shot of the day was about an hour out of Blythe - The scraggly rock hills just caught my eye:

All in all a great day. We ate lunch at Popeye's Chicken, then headed out a slightly different route - 78 to 111 South to HWY 8 and home.

On the way back we hit 30 mph headwinds... Holding 65 I returned only 32 MPG (I usually get 40). Jim, who usually gets 50 mpg was down to 39...

Needless to say there was an extra gas stop involved!

So 425 miles and 9 hours (including lunch and picture stops). A real nice day!

Sounds like a good ride! How warm was it down in the desert?

High 60's... 44 in Alpine when I left and 34 in Julian.

Beautiful day...  biker_h4h1

Great ride report and really good photos.  How did the bikes handle in the strong winds?

Nighthawk - No problem.. KLR - Jim was laying on the tank to try and hold 60-65... I finally let him lead so he could do what was comfortable, and when we hit the hills we were holding about 50... All the KLR could pull.  musicboohoo

I wish we had mountains, or even anything bigger than an ant hill.

Thanks for sharing.

Great ride!  Thank you for sharing. CA is incredible (still not sure I'd want to live there).  Us folks out East owe you a great photo report.   aparat
Thanks again,

Nice pics Warren,

What's up with the snow? I thought you were down there close to Mexico.

Nice pics Warren,

I am close, but the Cuyamaca's are only 30 minutes from me and go up to about 7000 feet.  smiler

I'm 30 minutes from the beach, 30 minutes from the snow, and 60 minutes from the desert.   thumb

Great shots!  I can't believe the variety of terrain you have to ride there.

Consider me jealous of the terrain you have to choose from. As pants said, I too wish we had something more than an ant hill. - From Flatistan (aka Florida)
Great pics!
