"Hang on lady, we going for a ride" - Short Round

« on: July 18, 2010, 11:13:15 PM »

I just got my freshly rebuilt engine back in the bike last week and I was wondering when I'd get a chance to break it in...when I get a txt message from Paul (ak85lp) Sunday morning and he asked if I wanted to go for a ride?
Uhmmmmm...you bet!  biker_h4h1

Paul brought his ST1100...damn that thing looks comfortable to ride!!

Stop for lunch at an iconic Canadian chain...which you may or may not recognize...

I remembered to take a pic of the food this time...
Turkey bacon club on wheat, toasted. Cream of potato bacon soup. Medium coffee with 1 cream...and mmmmmmm...double chocolate doughnut.

Guy on a sport bike pulled up just as we were leaving

And since this is a Video report section...here is some footage of my favorite parts of the ride today. Note the curves around the 6:30 mark by the lake. I imagine they would be close to Dragons Tale type of curves.

This is in Windows Media format. Click the image below and the video will open and start to stream with Windows Media Player. (or you can right click it and "save as")

If you can guess the artist and title of the first song, I will be impressed. I don't think anyone will get the second song...maybe where it came from though...

By the end of the ride, I could feel that the new engine was breaking it very nice  ricky

Very nice report gammer, glad to hear the heart transplant was a success!  I like the lunch, with the exception of the doughnut it looks really healthy and filling...not the norm in the good old US of A.  No wonder everybody is so homerish!

Thanks.

BTW, I know the video doesn't show it, but the average speed I was going through the twisties (up to the 6:30 mark, where the curves are really sharp) my average speed was around 65 - 75 MPH.

Just trying to demonstrate that the camera doesn't show how fast you are going.

Great video Jeff. You just had to work that new motor and make me keep up with you. :) Funny you didn't get the shot where I went past you?  winker

The first song is The Brazilian from Genesis's Invisible Touch. The 2nd one is harder but I'm guessing something from Ghost Rider videos as it was mentioned yesterday??

The next time we go out you can pilot the ST and see that it's not just for comfort alone.   biker_h4h1

Thanks for bringing this up...I wanted to tell you that when you blew past me, just before we came into Westport, I wasn't paying attention and had no idea you were going to pass me. When you went by, it made me jump out of my skin for a second  shog

Very good sir! Indeed the first song is The Brazilian from Genesis.

The second song is not from Ghost Rider...at least I don't think  scratcher
I will give a hint...It was used in a Hollywood movie that stared "12" popular actors/actresses.

Speaking of the Ghost Rider thing...Paul and I stopped at a store/gas station as the last stop on our ride. Had a guy come up to us and he was inquiring about my NH S and saying that he wanted to buy one and was having a hard time finding one. Anyway, he noticed the camera mounted on my bike and said: "Whats the camera for?"
I responded as polite as possible: "Well, what do you think its for?"
He answered: "To film your rides?"
and I almost said: "Here's your sign!". But I didn't.
He then asked me if 'I' was the Ghost Rider  ImaPoser

Nice video. I would have left the music out. The sound of the engine is music enough for me.

You can't really hear engine noise over the wind. Not unless you have a remote mic next to the engine out of the wind. Video without sound is just weird. The wind noise on the mic is just annoying. So music is a good way to cover it up.

This is what I was thinking too. Also, I watched the video without the music and I started to 'tune out' because off the wind noise and because the engine RPM was held constant for a period of time.

Also, I realize with adding music not everyone will like what music I choose. As its a subjective subject. So I tried going with something instrumental. I know its not great or matches 100%, but it will have to do.

Great report Gammer.  You live in beautiful country - it's on my bucket list.  That doughnut is mouth-watering.

The road at the 6 minute mark is twisty, no doubt.  IMO, not as twisty as the Dragon, though.  Really, you have to come to the next Deal's Gap Rally and see it for yourself.  Loki and I were commenting that, although the Dragon is cool, we like the Cherahola Skyway better, which is more like the road you depicted.  It's not quite as technical, and you can hold a little speed in the twisties (20-35 mph) compared to the dragon (10-20 mph).  Regardless - it's all good to me.

Looks like a great ride Gammer.  I really love how smooth the video is.  I know  you mentioned before but could you remind me where you mount your camera?  The scenery is relaxing and the road looks fun with just enough twists and turns to keep things interesting.

Really, you have to come to the next Deal's Gap Rally and see it for yourself.

I mentioned that idea to Paul yesterday. If we can get a covered trailer, it would be cool to get a couple of us to trailer it down and meet you guys there next year.

Did you put anything for vibration in the clamping on the bar ?? This vibration I'm getting is killing me.

Nothing on the bar. The trick is trying to get the mount as close to the center of the bar as possible. Obviously the physics of it state that the closer you mount it to the end of the bar, the more it will vibrate...closer to the center and it will vibrate less.
I did put some small padding between the RAM mount and the camera to help dampen the vibration noise. It helped a bit, but I think the vibration noise I am still getting is from the camera itself. Perhaps the screen that pulls out on the side is vibrating still.
Also, my camera has one of those 'anti-shake' devices built in, which also helps with it being less jittery.
But thats about it...

Well my mount is abut 3" right of center or so but it's a camera and has no anti-vib.

Going dual sporting this weekend, will try it on that animal but I'm sure it will be wacko. I hope it works cuz there's some cool over grown stuff were gona rip through. Probly crash and smash it to death  ricky
