Ok...so its a Yamaha Maxim 750 not a Nighthawk, but when its been a year since you last owned something that is even potentially rideable, you'll jump at anything. So alongside the Nighthawk 650 I have torn apart to sell parts from, I have a 1982 Yamaha Maxim 750 YICS. I'll post pictures soon, if I'm not working on the bike that is. I'm hoping to get it running before the season is up here in good old frostbitten Michigan and then make her pretty this winter, then probably end up selling it shortly thereafter if I can buy something else between now and then.

Yeah...gotta get the thing running first, but hopefully won't be long. First step was ordering an ignition for it which I did last night. I hope to get at least one good ride in before the end of the riding season here and then it'll be tear down time!

Welcome back to the group F/B.

Another forum member has a Maxim 750.  From what I gather, they are real similar to the NH in style and performance.  I think you have shim/bucket valve adjustments to deal with, though.

Alrighty, here is the beginning of the bike. I'm thinking about bobbing it so any suggestions would be welcome. The seat will be a definite change, plus the rear grab bar and trim will be gone.

Still not sure what the plan is for paint. If I keep the frame red it will be a different hue. I'm also thinking about replacing the tank with a nighthawk tank because I like the lines better and the Maxim tank is leaking. Then I will definitely be shaving the ugly seat down and quite possibly going solo seat on it. Then I have to lean out the rear to get it looking more like a bobber. First thing is to get it running though. I got the ignition and a new battery which is making the starter turn but no ignition. I'm guessing this will need a carb cleaning at least and possibly some other fuel line clean up. I have to first check and make sure I'm getting spark, then check fuel system if that's not the problem.

I had to Google Image this model, and it is just a stubby-looking bike.  Not necessarily bad, especially for bobbing.

Are the triangular chrome-framed side covers around?  They look neat, as do the wheels.  I'm guessing that massive passenger peg bracket supports the exhaust too.  Is the front fender chrome underneath? 

Gotta agree that the red frame paint is tinged wrong.  I'd really like to see cheesy round trailer lights in the back...

Yes, stubby would be about what I thought when I first saw it. I think though that it will be a good lookin bike bobbed, especially for the $200.00 that I spent on the original investment. I'm going to have fun working on it this winter for sure!
